In the Last day of the State Tournament for the Texas Little League, it came down to East Brownsville vs the Centex D9 All-Stars. In the previous two days of competition, the D9 bested Brownsville by winning the first game 16 to 1 and then shutting out Del Rio 17 to 0. ( an impressive collective of runs 33 to 1)
Since this was a double elimination tournament, in the Final day, D9 would have needed to lose two times in order to be eliminated. They would only have to defeat Brownsville one time.
East Brownsville did play as if they had nothing to lose, since this game going into the final few innings, was uncomfortably close. Their pitcher was on par with D9’s starter Christy McGuire (Academy ISD), and kept the team from Central Texas from blowing the game open early as it did two days earlier.
While the game was tied 2-2 going into the 5th inning, D9 started to chip away at the East Brownsville pitching with a Solo Home run by Ky-Li Alonzo (Rogers ISD) to make it 3-2. East Brownsville had no more answers offensively to D9 Pitching and in the bottom of the sixth D9 tacked on two more runs solidifying the win 5-2.
At the end of the day, our ladies from the 254 area code (D9 All-Stars) came home with the Little League State Title and an invitation to the Little League Regional Tournament in Alexandria Louisiana starting July 23rd.
The competition will be stiff and it will take a complete team effort to win and advance to the Little League World Series in Delaware.
For reference the Central Texas D9 All-Stars will now be known as Texas West
